Ingredients
Scale
Filling:
- 250 g (0.55 lb) imitation king crab sticks, shredded
- 200 g (0.44 lb) cream cheese, softened
- 1 tbsp Shaoxing wine
- 1 tbsp sesame oil
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 tsp chicken powder
- 1 tsp YumYum Umami Seasoning (or MSG)
To Assemble:
- 6 slices white bread
- 1/2 cup sesame seeds
- 2 tbsp oil, for brushing the bread (optional)
- Oil, for deep frying
Instructions
- Pull the imitation crab sticks apart into fine strands and transfer to a large bowl.
- Add the softened cream cheese and mix until well combined.
- Season with the Shaoxing wine, sesame oil, sugar, chicken powder and umami seasoning, then mix until the filling is smooth.
- Trim the crusts from the bread. Spread a generous layer of filling over one slice, then top with a second slice and press gently to seal.
- Press the edges of the sandwich into the sesame seeds until evenly coated.
- Heat oil in a wok over high heat. Carefully lower the toast in and fry until both sides are golden and crisp and the filling is heated through.
- Drain on a wire rack or paper towel, slice each toast into halves or quarters, and serve immediately while hot.
Notes
Use full-fat cream cheese and let it soften at room temperature so it blends smoothly with the crab. Keep the oil at a steady medium-high heat (around 170-180C) so the sesame crust turns deep gold before the bread soaks up oil. Slice with a serrated knife straight after frying for the cleanest crunch.
